Henry VIII requested an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon from Pope Clement VII in 1527. However his request was refused. As a result, Henry got very mad and decided to break away from the authority of the Church in Rome. The Reformation Parliament (1529–1536) passed laws abolishing papal authority in England and declared the English king to be head of the Church of England. An unusual divorce technique indeed.
