The Soviets launched Sputnik 1 - the first artificial Earth satellite - in 1957. The R-7 rocket was initially designed as an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by OKB-1. The most Soviet thing ever (although, to be fair, the U.S. did the exact same thing).
