In the 15th and 16th centuries, the term 'Conquistadors'—derived from the Spanish and Portuguese word for 'conquerors'—was used to describe the Iberian military explorers who spearheaded the European imperial expansions. These adventurers ventured into territories beyond the European knowledge, engaging and often overpowering indigenous forces. Following their military campaigns, the conquistadors played a crucial role in the redistribution of plunder and territories. "Conquistador" is a term that applies to both Spanish conquests in the Americas, and to Portuguese military campaigns in the Pacific and Africa.
