The Cambodian genocide, a period of mass murder and deliberate oppression carried out by the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, the Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea. Between 1975 and 1979, an estimated 1.5 to 2 million Cambodian citizens lost their lives, accounting for nearly a quarter of Cambodia's population at the time, which was around 7.8 million.
