Zvika Greengold is one of only eight people who fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur War war to be awarded the Medal of Valor, the nation's highest medal for heroism. A twenty-one-year-old Israeli Lieutenant Greengold was home on leave when Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated surprise attack on two fronts. He was not attached to any unit as he was about to take a course for company commanders. Upon realising that a conflict had erupted, he resorted to hitchhiking his way to Nafekh, a strategic command center situated at a crucial intersection in the Golan Heights. Initially, he assisted in tending to the wounded, given the unavailability of tanks. However, when two damaged Centurion tanks were restored to operational condition, Greengold assumed command over them. It is estimated that Zvika Greengold destroyed somewhere between 20-60 enemy tanks.
