Napoleon Bonaparte, initially Napoleone di Buonaparte, (15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821), later known as Napoleon I, rose to fame as a French emperor and military leader during the French Revolution and its subsequent wars. He served as the First Consul of the French Republic from 1799 to 1804 and then as the Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814, with a brief return in 1815. The 2023 film about Napoleon faced criticism for its historical interpretation. Historians, including Adam Tooze and Andrew Roberts, pointed out its omission of Napoleon's significant non-military contributions and his popularity among the French. Roberts, a biographer of Napoleon, dismissed the portrayal of Napoleon as akin to Hitler as both "tired and absurd." Historian Zack White concurred, suggesting the film echoed 19th-century British propaganda that unfairly branded Napoleon as a "Corsican ruffian."
